Enrollment in basic education

Basic education is the cornerstone of the education system and at the same time part of the education continuum that starts with preschool education. Basic education offers students the opportunity to form the basis of a broad general education and complete compulsory education.

Basic school lasts nine years and is intended for children aged 7-16. Compulsory schooling usually starts the year the child turns 7.

Children starting school in the fall will be assigned a nearby school without a separate application during February-March. Guardians notify their children entering the first grade at a separately announced time via the link on the main page of Äänekoski Peda.net.

Register (peda.net)

The child is invited to get to know the neighborhood school assigned by the city with a letter sent home, which is sent in connection with the neighborhood school decision. At other times, the child can be reported to the school by contacting us to the education office.

The town of Äänekoski has five basic education elementary schools and two unified schools. In 2022, the schools had a total of 1881 students in basic education. You can see the forecast of future student numbers made in February 2021 here.

The growth and learning department of the city of Äänekoski, which falls under the growth and learning board, is responsible for organizing basic education.
