The harmful substances found at Asemakatu school do not pose a danger to the residents
The demolition of the former service center will also begin

The city of Äänekoski is currently demolishing the former Asemakatu school in Suolahti. Harmful substances and oil have been found in the building. Harmful substances are removed as harmful substances and asbestos demolition. The harmful substances and oil found at Asemakatu school do not pose a danger to the residents.
- Demolition of harmful substances is strongly bound by law and the demolition methods come through it. The work methods are therefore precisely defined in the law. For example, a permit is applied for demolition and advance notice is given to the occupational health and safety authority in advance, Erika Räihä says.
- Hazardous material demolition work is always done as dust-free as possible and is done using the compartmentalized demolition method, and the work is not affected by whether the work is done indoors or outdoors. The demolition is carried out so to speak under the Hood, Räihä describes.
There is oil under the basement floor of the building and also near the old oil tank. Regarding the oil, the research report has been completed and based on it, the city will notify the ELY center about cleaning up the contaminated area. The authority makes a decision on cleaning, which issues regulations related to cleaning. The progress of the cleaning work is monitored by an environmental technical expert.
The actual amount of oil and the extent of the damage will become clear when the structures are opened completely and the contaminated soil is removed from under the building.
- The oil is removed in a controlled manner and the risks are minimized. The situation is now stable and the contaminated soil is taken into account in the demolition work, Räihä says.
During the fall, only clean concrete and brick will be crushed at the Asemakatu school, and no harmful substances or oil-stained concrete will be crushed on the property.
The demolition contractor is Maansiirto Harry Mäkelä Oy. The cost estimate for the demolition project is currently around one million euros. The work will be completed during the coming winter.

The operation of the city's central kitchen, which is closed in the building, is taken into account during the demolition work, and the demolition has no effect on the operation of the central kitchen.
The contractor is Mestaripurkajat Oy, and the cost estimate is around 370 euros. The demolition work will be completed by the end of 000.
