Surveyed satisfied residents

The people of Äänekoski are satisfied with a safe living environment, outdoor exercise opportunities and high school education, according to a survey conducted in 2022. According to the migration survey carried out by Innolink, the city of Äänekoski has succeeded in matters perceived to be important, such as creating a safe living environment and education.

Positive images of the home region

A migration survey was conducted in Äänekoski during the spring of 2022, when more than 300 permanent residents, those who moved to Äänekoski and those who moved out of the city were interviewed. The study was conducted by telephone interviews by Innolink. Äänekoski has been a migration loss municipality for a long time, and the aim of the study was to map the target group's images of Äänekoski and views on the city's success in different areas.

-Resident satisfaction and strengthening the so-called retention and attraction factors are an important part of the strategy of the city of Äänekoski, because without residents the city cannot function. One of the priorities of the Äänekoski phenomenon in our new city strategy is a good life, where the goal is that by 2028 the most satisfied people in Finland will live in Äänekoski. With the help of the migration survey, we wanted to find out if there are clear reasons behind why people move away from here, and on the other hand why many people enjoy themselves in Äänekoski, comments Sari Åkerlund, director of vitality.

Based on the research, the image of Äänekoski is still heavily focused on factories and industry, when asked what comes to mind first about the city. However, as a counterweight to industry, nature with its different areas and the home region are emphasized. Compared to previous studies high played a significantly smaller role in the responses.

When evaluating different factors, among all respondents, the best grades (4,2) were given to a safe living environment, outdoor exercise opportunities and high school education. Maintenance of streets and public areas (3,1) and functioning traffic connections (3,0) did the worst in the evaluations. The evaluation scale was between 1-5, of which 1=succeeded very poorly and 5=succeeded very well.

When the responses of different target groups are compared, it can be noticed that those who have moved out of the locality have given one sub-area an average of less than 3. Events have received an estimate of 2,9 from those who moved away, while the counterbalance library and cultural services and outdoor exercise opportunities have received an average of 4,1.

Among the respondents, the distinguishing factors were clear: closeness to nature (4,1), family friendliness (3,8) and good location (3,8).

Family, relatives and friends strongly influence the choice of a place to live

When those who moved away from Äänekoski were asked the most important reason for moving away, most of the answers (nearly 70%) were quite traditional. The answers emphasized the reasons, such as studying and working and moving closer to family, relatives and friends. Only three percent of the respondents said that the reason was the desire to move to a bigger city.

There were several reasons for moving to Äänekoski, and the most important of them were family, relatives and friends (29%) and returning to the home region (18%). Somewhat surprisingly, moving after work only ranked third in the survey.

Resident satisfaction is high

Satisfaction with living in Äänekoski is high (4,1). Both permanent residents and income migrants rate their satisfaction with living very highly, and 197% of the respondents (n=82) are very satisfied or satisfied.

The evaluations of staying in Äänekoski and moving back also seem positive. 88% of permanent residents and 73% of income migrants estimate that they will stay in Äänekoski in the future. About half (49%) of the departing emigrants estimate that they can move back to Äänekoski later.

Regarding the question whether you will stay in Äänekoski in the future, among the open answers, the last place of residence was highlighted (n 101). In several answers, it was said that the defendant has reserved a burial place in Äänekoski and that he intends to live in the city as long as his spirit lasts.

"I'm not changing, except for the cemetery."

"There's hardly going to be any more going on from here, the grave site is already reserved."
