Environment and climate program
The environment and climate program of the city of Äänekoski creates a unified basis for the city's climate management and safeguarding biodiversity, as well as for their control and development measures.
In the city strategy, the city of Äänekoski is committed to making and supporting sustainable development in all its activities. The strategic goal in 2028 is to be known for its style, a little giant of sustainable development and good life that is more impressive than its size.
Through the environment and climate program, the Sustainable Environment strategic dimension and its carbon neutrality goal are implemented. The program serves as guidelines for the entire Äänekoski city group, i.e. the city organization and the entities and foundations under its control, with its goals, metrics and action plans. The program is valid for the strategic period 2022–2028.

Three main goals towards a sustainable Äänekoski
1) Carbon neutrality and shared environmental responsibility
Äänekoski city for climate workthe main goal set is an 80% reduction in regional greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to 2005. In addition, by the target year, we are aiming for carbon neutrality, i.e. a situation where the city's operations generate no more greenhouse gases than it can bind them from the atmosphere.
The focus of the city of Äänekoski's climate work is especially energy efficiency, the use of renewable forms of energy, and the promotion of low-carbon construction and movement.
2) Diverse and healthy nature
Diverse nature with extensive forests, diverse traditional landscapes and clear lakes are Äänekoski's strength. The city of Äänekoski wants to take care of these resources by reducing the environmental load of its own operations and by taking care of the well-being of the natural environment.
The city's key means of influence are related use of forestsand for the development of green area management measures, for the control of alien speciesand habitat restoration and protection measures.
3) A functioning and fair circular economy
In a circular economy, natural resources are used sustainably and materials and goods remain in circulation for as long as possible. In its own activities, the city of Äänekoski pays particular attention to procurement, construction, land use and renewable energy.
Regionally, actions are directed towards reducing total consumption and promoting material cycles. In addition, the circular economy enables new forms of business, which promotes the vitality of the entire region and the well-being of the residents.
