Nomenclature design

Decision making

The city council and the city government decide on the nomenclature related to zoning in connection with the approval of the plans. A special consideration is used for streets designated by a separate decision of the city council (MRL § 55). The nomenclature committee, which operates every council term, is appointed by the city government. The names of roads outside the site plan areas and name changes are discussed in the nomenclature committee, and the decision on the name is made in land use services. The land surveying engineer is responsible for informing the property owner. The City Council has confirmed the principles of naming planning in Äänekoski.

Preparation

The nomenclature committee is responsible for preparing the nomenclature presented in the station plans and the nomenclature to be changed by a separate decision. The nomenclature of the sparsely populated area is created based on the proposals of the village committees and the residents of the area. The nomenclature committee prepares the principles of nomenclature planning for approval by the city council. Supplementing the address system is not possible without nomenclature planning, which ensures that the new names are in accordance with accepted principles and are compatible with the previous address nomenclature.

The nomenclature is part of the local distinctiveness

The names carry with them the history of the city. Basically, when planning the nomenclature, when naming streets, roads and public areas, the aim is to use the historical place names of the region, the names of people who have had an impact in the region, or e.g. names related to the historical activities of the region. As a basis for planning, the existing traditional place names should be found out and primarily the already established, in use place names of one's own area should be used. Even names that have been lost from everyday use, for example only found on old maps, documents or literature, can be revived if they can be located in the planned area. In new areas, the nomenclature is usually developed around a topic, which makes it easier to understand that the name belongs to a certain area.

A good name takes cultural values and people's needs into account, strengthens the sense of home and increases coziness. Ideally, the name is also easy to remember, pronounce and write.

A street, square, park or other object is not named after a functioning business establishment, company or public-law entity. However, the name of a company or community can be considered for use in the scheme name, if it has operated under the same name for several generations in the same location and has great local significance.

A sparsely populated area

The principle of road naming in a sparsely populated area is that there must be three occupied single-family houses or leisure apartments along the road. A road that is too short is not named, even if there are three objects in use. The road leading to the properties must be in drivable condition, taking into account large rescue vehicles. from property owners along the road. It is advantageous if the address name is related to the surrounding nomenclature, place or area or it can be identified as belonging to a certain area. The road name is accepted in accordance with the Nomenclature Committee's opinion and the decision of the city of Äänekoski.

When planning the nomenclature, the instructions of the Association of Municipalities are taken into account.

Memorial names

Commemorative names in naming planning mean names that are consciously given in memory of a person, event or other matter. In Äänekoski's zoning, we apply the instructions of the Center for Finnish Languages when we consider naming streets and other public places in memory of a person, tradition or other event. We want to point out that people can be remembered in other ways. Valuable ways of remembering people are also memorials, plaques and plaques, commemorative publications, exhibitions and other events, etc.

A street, square, park or other object can be named after a person or in memory, if the person and his actions are generally recognized as worth remembering and the person is associated with the place in a significant and positive way, or represents its historical stratification, or the person was born or lived for a significant part of his life, or has made a significant life's work in the locality, or the person is a Finn who has made a nationally or internationally significant life's work. A person should enjoy respect and appreciation also outside his own field, political reference group and era. The UN Conference on Place Names (1965, 2002) recommends that memorial names are not given after living persons and memorial names are given very carefully. If the street name is full of commemorative names, it no longer fulfills its guiding function and does not help to remember those who have been given a commemorative name.
