Äänekoski has several ice hockey rinks and skating rinks, the equipment level and size of which vary.

Artificial ice in the sports park (kaukalo) is number one in the order of importance in Äänekoski. The next step is to get the ice in Suolahti Asemakatu, Sumiainte center and Konginkangka rink in good condition. 

Many small fields, where people work hard with hose spraying into the night, may still be finished before these. In suitable weather conditions, artificial ice can be used in up to 3-4 days. Making natural ice for skating rinks, on the other hand, requires consecutive frosty days of -5 to -6 degrees around the clock for at least a week, mostly two weeks.

The natural ice areas have suffered from a long protection period. For safety reasons, the maintenance staff have had to close the ice areas, because the ice is dangerously porous and sometimes even the ground shines through on the green areas' skating rinks. The artificial ice in the sports park is in skating condition. We will see if the ice can still be partially used over the weekend.

Maintenance during the winter season

The fields are maintained and plowed almost daily in the largest settlements, and in sparsely populated areas, efforts are made to ensure that the ice is usable for the weekends. Since most of the plowing is done by local entrepreneurs in remote villages, who also plow the roads, there may be a slight delay in getting to the ice fields. All ice fields have snow shovels and pushers so that you can clean the ice while waiting for the plowing. If you notice any holes in the ice, please report it to the maintenance person and mark the spot with a stick or in some other way. Please do not leave plowed snow/slush to freeze on the edges of the rink, but move the snow outside the rink, thank you.

Cutting weather conditions and ice 

The rapid cooling of the weather and at the same time the accumulation of sleet on the ice rinks is sometimes a challenge for maintenance workers. In such circumstances, it is good to be prepared for the fact that the maintenance staff may temporarily close the ice for safety reasons. Maintenance will continue in these areas as soon as possible.

Using artificial ice is free of charge. There is a manager of the sports grounds. Follow the instructions. If necessary, the artificial ice can be divided into stick and non-stick halves. We recommend the use of skate guards in the maintenance building and the use of a helmet on the ice. On weekdays, the artificial ice is used a lot by schoolchildren. Kaukalo had very little use and demand. The main reason for stopping was that there is not enough water pressure in Saarikka to freeze the hoses, but the entire village loses water as a result of the freezing. The target is too far for tank freezing.

The illuminated fitness stairs on the edge of the field and at the top of the slope. The Honkola village association has received village development money for lights on the fitness stairs and lighting of the unofficial sledding hill on the edge of the field. The lighting work is complete. Now it is safe to go down the sledding hill even in the dark and the stairs stand out beautifully.
