Basic education for adults
Basic education for adults is intended for people who have passed the compulsory education age, who do not have a basic school leaving certificate or who want to raise the grades of their leaving certificate. For people with an immigrant background, it is a significant enabler of integration.
The purpose of the guidance system for adult basic education is to take care of the equality and quality of education and to create good conditions for the student's postgraduate studies. Basic education for adults gives the same opportunities for further studies as basic education for compulsory education.
You can participate in adult basic education from the fall semester of the year you turn 17.
A personal study plan is made for each adult basic education student. In basic education for adults, you can start studying either from the beginning phase or the final phase. The initial phase may also include a literacy phase.
The task of the initial phase is to ensure that the student has basic knowledge and skills as well as essential study and knowledge acquisition skills so that he can study in the final phase of adult basic education.
According to the decree issued by the Government (136/2017), the studies of the final stage of basic education for adults consist of compulsory and optional courses of different subjects and subject groups. Below is a link to the curriculum for the adult basic education of the city of Äänekoski.

Duration and scope of training
The duration of the literacy phase is about 1 year. The literacy phase includes 23 compulsory courses and at least 4 optional courses, a total of 27 courses.
The duration of the rest of the initial phase is about 1 year. The initial phase includes 33 compulsory courses and at least 5 optional courses, a total of 38 courses.
The duration of the decision phase is about 2 years. The final phase includes 38 compulsory courses and at least 8 optional courses, a total of 46 courses.
