In Sumiais, the trail meanders through the central Finnish lake landscapes of the villages of Syvälahti, Lohilahti and Vihijärvi, along forested slopes and ridges, sometimes climbing to mountains offering beautiful distant forest views. From time immemorial, the villagers have managed their interactions along waterways along easy-to-navigate ridge and fabric paths. The village association of Syvälahti has cleared and marked part of the resulting extensive path network, which was already running out, as a rural development project. Now the trails are the joy of all nature walkers!

Markkamäki nature trail – Äänekoski

The Markkamäki nature trail is located north of the center of Äänekoski and offers a route of about 1,5 kilometers in beautiful natural surroundings. However, there is a name sign and a map board at the starting point on the west side of the route, and the path is also marked with yellow-orange paint markings, which makes orientation easier.

There are nine nature trail boards along the route, which tell about the nature of the area. The boards also have QR codes, which can be used to get more information about the flora, fauna and geology of the area. In addition to the signs on the nature trail, there are no other signs or structures on the route, so hikers should be prepared to walk on their own.

The route starts at the edge of the fitness track and heads northeast. At first, the path follows the fitness track, but soon diverges sharply to the northeastern and stony path, which descends to a wetter ground. This section can be particularly wet in the early season, so it is advisable to prepare with suitable footwear.

At its easternmost point, the trail bends over silo rocks, which can be slippery in the rain. From here, the journey continues northwest to the fabric terrain, where the route crosses steep terrain with pine fabric. The path crosses again with the fitness track and continues to its end point as a fabric path.

There is a fitness center at the end of the route, where you can do muscle conditioning exercises and stretch before continuing the journey. The Markkamäki nature trail offers a versatile and educational outdoor experience in beautiful natural landscapes.
