Teaching well-being skills
Äänekoski all 1.-9. the classes use a well-being skills curriculum called Good growth, which provides the structures and foundations for how schools can systematically and consistently strengthen the well-being of children and young people. At the same time, the marginalization of young people can be prevented. A large part of the materials of the well-being skills curriculum can also be used in early childhood education and pre-school education.
The city of Äänekoski is a pioneer in wide-ranging well-being education, and we have been doing long-term and consistent work for the development and teaching of well-being education since 2016. Well-being education has become part of the structures of school culture and it concerns children and young people from early childhood education up to the 9th grade of basic education.
In Äänekoski, the well-being of children and young people has been seen as an important common goal of the school communities, which has created a foundation and direction for the activities of the school communities. The local Good growth curriculum guides the daily teaching and educational work of basic education in Äänekoski, building a strong common direction for the teaching and learning of well-being skills.
The good growth curriculum is also in line with Äänekoski's city strategy, when one of the main goals of the strategy is a good life, which is implemented e.g. by teaching well-being skills and noticing the good.
Teachers have been trained systematically and long-term
The city of Äänekoski has invested in teacher training for positive pedagogy and comprehensive well-being education for years and has been developing the schools' competence in the long-term in terms of teaching well-being skills. In 2024, Äänekoski schools and early childhood education will have a total of 75 teachers of positive pedagogy and comprehensive well-being education who have undergone a year-long supplementary training.
The positive pedagogy and comprehensive well-being education training program is based on research and practical applications of well-being skills and school well-being in students. Research on positive pedagogy has confirmed that exercises, such as building emotional and interaction skills and a positive community action culture, can have a positive effect on students' well-being and learning outcomes.
