We want better and safer walking and cycling routes for Äänekoski

The city of Äänekoski received funding of 18 euros from Traficom to create a program to promote walking and cycling. The preparation of the program is part of the active climate and environmental work of the city of Äänekoski. We take care of our environment so that we can leave it better for future generations.
- The program for the promotion of walking and cycling is often a prerequisite when the city applies for grants for pedestrian and cycling paths and construction related to traffic safety. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom grants state aid to municipalities for improving conditions for pedestrian and bicycle traffic in sites located on the street network or on municipal land, developer Jukka Karppinen says.
- In Äänekoski, the goal is to develop walking and cycling opportunities in a planned and long-term way, so that in the future we can get even safer, better and more continuous walking and cycling routes here. Personally, I think the most important thing in this job is improving traffic safety. At the same time, we promote increasing low-emission mobility in the city, says Karppinen.
Residents are widely consulted
With the help of the completed program, the aim is to improve the smoothness and safety of walking and cycling in Äänekoski and to increase their share of traffic. The promotion program applies to the whole of Äänekoski and all the agglomerations of Suolahte, Sumiai and Konginkanga.
For the program, the promotion of walking and bicycle traffic is looked at comprehensively among the city's various industries and key stakeholders. It is also important to hear the residents' views and needs. Residents are involved in the project and e.g. workshops and four surveys for different target groups: residents, schoolchildren, companies and bicycle tourists and enthusiasts. Trustees are also invited to participate in the preparation of the program.
The project is coordinated by urban construction services and Movili Oy has been selected as the consultant for the project through a tender. Äänekoski's walking and cycling promotion program will be completed in November 2024.
In addition to the walking and cycling promotion program project, the city of Äänekoski is running Resource-wise Äänekoski - Low-emission road transport project, whose goal is to reduce regional emissions from road traffic by speeding up the development of the distribution infrastructure for alternative operating forces.
