The spread of infections can be reduced with good hand and cough hygiene.
Various infectious diseases, including respiratory infections, are now widespread in Central Finland and throughout Finland. Good hand and cough hygiene can reduce infections.
Respiratory infections, such as colds - flu, corona, influenza and stomach diseases, are usually spread by droplet or contact infection.
– There are currently respiratory infections caused by several different viruses circulating in Central Finland. Of these, the number of influenza cases is increasing slightly, but the number of corona cases is decreasing. The whooping cough and mycoplasma epidemics that began in the autumn are subsiding. In addition to these pathogens, there are many pathogens that cause milder flu, so everyone should take care of good hand and cough hygiene, says Chief Infectious Diseases Physician Jaana Leppäaho-Lakka.
Many diseases are spread through hands from touching surfaces. Good hand hygiene is the most important way to prevent infections. It is a good idea to wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water.
For example, you should wash your hands,
- when going to daycare, school, work, a friend's house, visiting an elderly person,
- on the way home,
- after using the toilet and sneezing or coughing,
- when hands are visibly dirty and
- before eating.
Hand sanitizer can also be used, especially when there is no opportunity to wash your hands.
The spread of diseases can also be prevented by good cough hygiene – coughing and sneezing into your sleeve or a disposable tissue. After sneezing and blowing your nose, throw the tissue in the trash. After this, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer or hand sanitizer.
– When you are sick, it would be a good idea to avoid moving around in crowds and visiting, for example, elderly relatives, so that diseases do not spread to loved ones, reminds hygiene coordinator Jaana Palosara.
If you have to go to a pharmacy or store when you are sick, for example, you can wear a face mask to prevent the spread of infection.
