Winter feeding of birds - Where can you feed the birds?

You can feed the birds freely in your yard. If you plan to feed the birds in the area of the housing association, you should agree the rules of the game with the housing association and the neighbors. Feeding must not cause health or hygiene harm to neighbors or the surrounding environment.
In public areas, such as parks or recreation areas, permission from the landowner is required to feed the birds. The housing association can prohibit or limit the feeding of birds in yards, balconies or windowsills in its rules of order.
Feeding must not cause health or hygiene harm to neighbors or the surrounding environment. Make sure that rats, mice or nuisance birds do not get to the feeding place. Stop feeding if the surrounding environment becomes dirty or nuisance birds or rats multiply in the area.
When placing the feeding place, it is necessary to take into account a large enough distance from the buildings, so that the birds do not fly towards the windows. Thick trees and bushes provide shelter for visitors to the feeding area. Feed the birds on the bird feeder, the food on the ground attracts rats and other pests. You should also choose a place so that the cats can't catch the diners.
Birds do not need to be fed in the summer, because they find the food they need in nature. Seed food offered in the summer may also hinder the growth of small bird chicks, as the nutritional content of seeds and tallow is different from the chicks' natural insect food. One-sided and incorrect nutrition can cause the chicks to have irreparable damage to the development of the wing skeleton that prevents them from flying. In addition, in warm weather, diseases spread easily at feeding places.
What can you feed the birds?
Birds can be given, for example, peanuts, sunflower seeds, tallow, oats or millet. When choosing food, you should prefer domestic products whenever possible. Once winter feeding has started, it should not be stopped until spring. However, feeding should not be continued at the beginning of the breeding season.
This is how you feed the birds:
- use a feeder or a bird board
- only give food suitable for feeding birds
- do not give the birds food waste
- keep the base of the feeding area clean
