Bridge renovation moves forward in the center of Äänekoski on highway 642

Traficom has approved the road plan prepared by the Central Finland ELY Centre. The State Budget for 2025 approved by Parliament states that the renewal of the bridge is one of the new road projects to be initiated this year. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is responsible for implementation.

The bridge on Highway 642, or Äänekoskentie, in the central business district of Äänekoski will be renovated next to the existing bridge. The renovation is necessary because the load-bearing capacity of the existing bridge can no longer be increased through basic renovation measures.

The new bridge will primarily meet the load-bearing requirements set by increasingly heavy industrial transport. In addition, the plans for the area include measures aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. Since the alignment of the road will change with the new bridge location, the ELY Centre has prepared a road plan that has now been approved.

– The preparation of the road plan began in February 2023. A public meeting has been held along the way and the plan has been on display in August-September 2024. The approval decision will also be on display now in January-February, reminds project manager Elina Valkeejärvi.

The bridge construction plan is being prepared, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is responsible for the practical implementation of the project.
