Äänekoski's ski slope Äänemäki was opened on 16.12.2023 December XNUMX for the first time with the strength of three slopes. On the opening day, the slope had plenty of visitors throughout the opening hours. The city of Äänekoski has invested in a new slope and lift in Äänemäki. The new slope is considerably longer than the other two slopes and is even better suited for beginner skiers. Äänekoski Urheilijat is responsible for the operation of the city's ski slope during the winter season.

The new third slope gathered several skiers right from the opening and the slope was characterized as very good and comfortable to ski. The new slope has also been described as the best that can be found in the south due to its wonderful profile and good rideability. Äänemäki has become a versatile and fun ski center that serves more and more people.

- Most of them seem to have a good grasp of the slope rules. However, it would be important to remember that pulling to the side is not allowed in lift behavior, acting as Ski Patrol on the opening day Petri Aaltonen recalls. 

- It is also worth noting that outside the delimited slope area there may be stones, valves belonging to the snowmaking system, which are currently hidden under the snow. Because of this, it is strictly forbidden to descend outside the marked slope area due to the safety risk.

The new lift has been purchased from Puijo in Äänemäki, Kuopio. The lift serves to get to the top of all three slopes. For now, you can only go up the slope with a newer lift. The older one is undergoing final renovations before it is put into use for the season. 

The users of the new lift can, in addition to the comfortable slope, enjoy the wonderful scenery at the upper station. Down on the slope Jaana Savolainen described the scenery on the slope as comparable even to the slopes of Kuusamo. 

- The new slope is also very good for boarders, Savolainen adds.

A ski instructor also working in Äänemäki Joona Järvikallio says that the renovation of the slope was expected. 

- The renovation diversifies the center's offer, because the slope is also suitable for skiers who are just starting out, and even more experienced skiers praised the new slope during the day. The new slope also brings opportunities for holding ski schools and skiing days for school groups thanks to its more beginner-friendly profile.

Slope manager Jorma Kiviranta tells praises from the rainmakers. Kiviranta says that he is extremely satisfied with the reform.

- The almost ten-year project has been completed with regard to the slope and the lift, and it feels really good. When the snowmaking system can still be renewed, Äänemäki will be an excellent neighborhood center, perhaps even the best in the whole of Southern Finland, Kiviranta states.

At the beginning of January, the official inauguration of the new slope will be held in Äänemäki. The event will also include a variety of fun programs.

The flying squirrel situation in the felling areas of the city of Äänekoski was clarified in the spring: according to ELY, it was found that there was no breeding or resting place for the flying squirrel in the area

According to information received from the media, the Keskinen Suomen liito-oravayhdistys ry has filed a criminal complaint about logging by a forest company in Äänekoski. The police have launched a preliminary investigation to find out if Stora Enso cut down the forest in the flying squirrel nesting area. The logging area is owned by the city of Äänekoski. During the fall, concrete and brick will be crushed at the Asemakatu school, which will cause noise and dust nuisance as well as vibration. We strive to reduce harm to residents and the environment in all our activities. We save natural resources by using the demolished and crushed concrete and brick of the school building later in infrastructure construction.

- At the beginning of the current council term, the trustees of Äänekoski made a bold decision when the strategic partnership operating model was implemented in cooperation between the city and Äänekoski Kiinteistönhoito Oy. The goal of the partnership was to save one million euros during the term of the council, but so far, savings of 1,36 million euros and more have already been achieved. The quality of the work has improved, trust has grown and work has become more efficient. And above all, with better cooperation, we provide our residents with a better service, mayor Matti Tuononen says.

There is scope for low emissions, but it requires cooperation

The results of the Resource-wise Äänekoski - Low-emission road transport project, financed by the Ministry of the Environment and the city of Äänekoski, are ready. The goal of the survey is to reduce traffic emissions. Operators in the region have the will to make their business carbon neutral, and more refueling infrastructure is needed. The survey added dialogue between operators in the area, i.e. companies with heavy traffic, as well as low-emission fuel distributors, and explored the city's potential for influence.
