Äänekoski's Koulunmäki unified school is celebrating climate week
Climate week has also been celebrated at Äänekoski's Koulunmäki unified school this week.
The food waste on the porridge day was only ten liters.
As usual, the school has celebrated food waste week and the kitchen staff has measured in liters how much food has had to be thrown into the bio-waste every day.
Especially on Wednesday's porridge day, there was very little wastage in the big school, only ten liters. Monday's tangerine peels brought the amount of biowaste to a total of 60 liters.
In addition to monitoring food waste, an ideation competition has been organized for middle school students on how to save energy at school and otherwise. Student union supervising teacher Maarit Kaiponen you can see that children and young people have a lot of information, but another thing is how to implement climate actions and energy saving in their everyday life - somewhat in the same way as adults.
Principal Mauri Kangaskesti believes that the students might come up with something completely new to save energy, which adults haven't even thought of yet.
Koulunmäki's elementary school students also participate in the energy saving competition by class under the guidance of their teachers.
And of course, the student and the class that came up with the best ideas will be rewarded, and the principal still has to come up with an attractive prize!
Today, the students will be discussing some climate and energy issues anyway. According to Kangaskest, schools in Äänekoski have begun to mentally prepare themselves for possible planned power outages in the coming winter, if Finland were to experience a power shortage and there would be a need for regulation. Anticipating power outages would be of primary importance for schools, as almost all teaching requires electricity.
Ball forward!
Koulunmäki knows that other schools in Äänekoski have already thought about these issues and implemented many of their ideas, but we challenge them to continue working on this important issue!
The city of Äänekoski participates in the communication campaign of Central Finland's climate week by publishing a series of information on the climate actions of the city of Äänekoski on October 10-14.10.2022, XNUMX. The city of Äänekoski also wants to challenge its personnel, residents, companies and other parties to joint climate talks. A sustainable environment is also one of the most important goals in Äänekoski's city strategy.
Food service worker Marika Kuivakangas and principal Mauri Kangaskesti are satisfied with the results of the food waste week.
