Metsä Group is building a 300 million euro Kerto LVL wood product factory in Äänekoski

Metsä Group has decided to build a new plywood factory in Äänekoski, which produces beam and board materials used by the construction industry. Tell me® LVL products significantly reduce the carbon footprint of buildings compared to many other material options. The value of the investment is 300 million euros, and the factory is estimated to start up at the end of 2026.
The factory's annual production capacity is approximately 160 cubic meters, which increases the company's Kerto LVL capacity by approximately 000 percent. Roundwood production mainly serves the construction industry in the European market.
- Metsä Group's task is to efficiently process the wood of Finnish forest owners into renewable products for the needs of the world's population. We invest in world-class factories that ensure our competitiveness in a changing operating environment and create well-being for society long into the future. Next, we will invest in the production of hardwood that stores carbon for a long time, says the CEO of Metsä Group Ilkka Hämälä.
Kerto LVL is a building material made of wood veneers, which combines material efficiency and the high processing value of wood. Because of its excellent technical properties, Kertopuu is suitable for very versatile construction, for example elements and modular construction.
- Most of the carbon footprint of construction comes from building materials. Therefore, interest in building materials based on renewable raw materials is growing as builders look for more responsible alternatives. Thanks to its material efficiency, Kertopuu is a competitive and sustainable solution to the growing use of wood in construction, says Metsä Wood's branch manager Jaakko Anttila.
The new roundwood factory is located in the integrated factory in Äänekoski, the synergies of which are utilized, e.g. in energy production, logistics and services. The side streams generated in the integrated production of hardwood can be utilized 100%, and the highest possible added value is obtained from the valuable raw material.
The direct employment effects of the new factory are about 150 new jobs. In addition, the new factory adds approximately 200 man-years directly to its value chain. The employment effects of the construction phase are estimated to be around 1 person-years. The annual use of logs procured from Finland at the new factory is approximately 000 cubic meters. Metsä Group currently manufactures Kerto LVL products in Lohja and Punkaharju.
