Äänekoski's greenhouse emissions have decreased
The city of Äänekoski actively monitors the development of greenhouse gases in the region
The city of Äänekoski actively monitors the development of greenhouse gases in the area with the help of the CO2 report. According to the latest report, emissions in Äänekoski decreased in 2022: without industry, Äänekoski's emissions decreased by as much as 5 percent, while on average in the municipalities of the CO2 report they decreased by four percent in 2021-2022. Consumer choices are reflected in the results.
In all areas of the report, the figures decreased or remained the same. Emissions decreased e.g. in consumers' electricity consumption, electric heating and industrial electric heating.
- The people of Äänekoski have taken the climate issue as their own and consumers are making sustainable choices. It is now reflected in this report. For example, the development of heating emissions from buildings is always going in the right direction. At Äänekoski, the environment manager has actively switched to more sustainable solutions, such as district and geothermal heating Hanna Ahonen says.
- The direction is right, although there is still a lot of work to be done in order to reach our emission reduction goals. The strategic goal of the city of Äänekoski is to be a carbon-neutral city in 2030.
Ambitious climate work
This year, the city of Äänekoski is focusing especially on low-emission road transport through the Low-emission road transport project. The project promotes the development of biofuels and electric charging stations in Äänekoski.
The city of Äänekoski was among the first Finnish municipalities to calculate consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions in 2021.
Äänekoski has also been the first Hinku municipality in Central Finland. Hinku is a network of climate change mitigation pioneers founded in 2008, which Äänekoski joined as the first municipality in central Finland in 2019. The goal of the Hinku network is an 80% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to the 2007 level.
Since 2013, the city of Äänekoski has participated in the municipal energy efficiency agreement (KETS). The goal of the commitment is to reduce the city's energy consumption in each contract period. The goal of the current contract period (2017–2025) is 7,5% energy savings.
The city of Äänekoski is strongly involved in promoting Central Finland's climate work. Thanks to its long-term climate work, Äänekoski is considered one of the pioneers in the entire province. The city cooperates closely with other central Finnish municipalities and the Union of Central Finland. The provincial carbon-neutral Central Finland goal aims for 80% reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to 2007.
