The city of Äänekoski maps the alien species present in its area - Report your findings to vieraslajit.fi
Alien species are plant and animal species that migrate from one area to another due to human influence. Harmful alien species are classified as a small part of alien species that succeed by multiplying and spreading effectively, causing significant harm to native species and habitats, human health or the economy.
- Harmful alien species are one of the most significant reasons for the deterioration of biodiversity. By participating in the fight against alien species, you are a great help in protecting Äänekoski's nature. Observations play a very important role when planning targeted prevention measures, says the environmental manager Hanna Ahonen.
Äänekoski city's urban structure service and environmental action challenge the residents to help with the removal and mapping of alien species. In particular, our most common guest species are under scrutiny: lupine, gray rose, giant balsam, giant tartar and giant pipes.
The removal of alien species is the responsibility of the landowner, and no measures may be taken on another's property without permission. It is easy to mark the locations of guest species on the site vieraslajit.fi without having to log in. Instructions for removing guest species can be found on the same page.

Regarding the areas owned and managed by the city of Äänekoski, the contact person is the city gardener Tiina Nejlik. Reporting an alien species sighting to the city or the vieraslaji.fi website does not automatically mean that the alien species will be rejected - at least not immediately.
- If the giant pipe sighting is on the city's land, we can fight them. Other alien species, such as lupins, giant balsams, will not be controlled due to the current lack of resources. The green area agreement with property management includes the control of alien species from built-up green areas in connection with other management measures, Nejlik says.
