The inclusive story of Äänekoski print
A city in the lap of nature emphasizes community and love of home

The city of Äänekoski wanted to commission a unique print to celebrate its 110th anniversary, as both residents and tourists had been asking about Äänekoski products. People want to buy beautiful souvenirs from Äänekoski and take home products from their hometown as gifts.
- With the Äänekoski print, we wanted to emphasize the sense of community, the love of our hometown and the fact that we want to be proud of our own hometown and highlight its strengths. Print has received a lot of praise from both residents and tourists, a marketing and tourism expert Milla Hytönen says.
The Äänekoski print was created through participation, in line with the city strategy, as participation increases value, commitment and community. The print was based on an online survey of residents. Residents were asked what is the best thing about Äänekoski, what is their favorite place, what adjectives they would use to describe Äänekoski, and what products they would like the print to be used on.
In the residents' answers, Äänekoski's nature as a whole was particularly emphasized - our wonderful waterways, beaches, harbors and bridges, and forests. In Äänekoski, nature is close, around and everywhere.
The well-known buildings of Äänekoski also came up in the answers, and the old Suolahti station was named as one of the favorite places in Äänekoski.
A city in the lap of nature
A young, award-winning pattern designer from Äänekoski Kaisla Kujanpää was selected as the author of the print. Kuos's main idea was a city in the lap of nature. The designer wanted to capture in print the views of the people of Tunakoski about their hometown.
In the print, we wanted to bring out the water, forest, different leaves and plants that surround the beautiful buildings, islands and bridges of Äänekoski.
An important idea was also the small details - the fact that not everything is immediately visible at first glance, but you have to stop to investigate more closely and find it. The patterns also include e.g. berry pickers, boatmen, a fisherman and a steam train.
Some have joked that there are only churches in the patterns, but of course there are other buildings besides the Konginkanka and Sumiainen churches. The print includes Äänekoski Art Museum, Wille, Central School, Pukkimäki's beautiful wooden house and Suolahti's Old Station. There are also the ordinary homes of the people of Tunakoski.
The print will be used in the marketing materials and products of the city of Äänekoski, as well as in sales products even after the jubilee year. The beautiful pattern lends itself to many things.
– The Äänekoski print has so far been used to make linen kitchen towels/tablecloths and a coffee can, which have been the most popular products. City employees can use it as a cover or wallpaper if they wish. New marketing products are also being planned, Hytönen hints.
All products produced by the City of Äänekoski aim to be domestic and ecological wherever possible. Äänekoski print products are on sale at the Äänekoski Main Library and the Äänekoski Art Museum. Read more about the products here.
