The need for rehabilitation of wastewater systems is assessed in Äänekoski both in conurbations and sparsely populated areas

The environmental control of the city of Äänekoski carries out targeted monitoring of wastewater systems of properties in the Äänekoski area. Environmental control approaches residents by letter and asks them to submit a wastewater report, based on which the need for renovation can be assessed.
- All properties should have a wastewater report. A carefully filled out form facilitates the assessment work and unnecessary inspection visits are avoided. If you can't find a wastewater report on the property, models can be found online, instructs the environmental manager Hanna Ahonen.
You don't have to wait for the environmental authority to contact you, but you should start remedial measures immediately. Renovation requires a designer familiar with waste water matters, who designs the most functional system for each property that will certainly meet the requirements. As a general rule, renovating the system requires a construction permit, so permit issues must be clarified in advance with building control.
It is good for the citizens to be aware that renovation work cannot be avoided. It is the property owner's responsibility to ensure that the wastewater system meets the requirements of the law, even without an official request. If the property's wastewater system is found to be deficient, efforts are made to contact the property owner first by phone and then with a written prompt about renovating the wastewater system.
By treating wastewater correctly, you protect your local water bodies
The owner of the property has an obligation to ensure that the waste water is diverted and treated in such a way that it does not cause a risk of environmental pollution. The wastewater treatment requirements based on the Environmental Protection Act had to be met, and the property-specific systems were renovated almost four years ago for those properties that are located in the groundwater area or no more than 100 meters away from a body of water.
Untreated wastewater contains impurities, nutrients and pathogens, causing eutrophication of waterways and contamination of groundwater and domestic water wells. No waste water, even carrier water, may be discharged directly into a water body.
- Reducing the load caused by property-specific wastewater is an important means of protecting our valuable waterways, Hanna Ahonen emphasizes.
