Kapeenniemi's recreation area and popular waterways were improved with funding from Leader Viisari

The Attractive recreation areas project led by the city of Äänekoski was implemented during 2023. It received funding of around 38 euros from Leader VIISARI. The purpose of the project was to develop the already popular camping and boating destinations in Äänekoski. Kapeenniemi recreation area, Rekolahti, Viukari island and Petäjäsaari were chosen as the development sites of the project.
Changes in the recreation area of Kapeenniemi - The increase in the number of visitors brings with it mild phenomena
One of the most popular excursion destinations in Äänekoski is the Kapeenniemi recreation area. It includes three routes of different levels, along which there are shelters, fire places and an accessible landing stage. With the help of the project, the sheds were renovated, a new group of tables was brought in, instructions for the use of the area were added, and a new firewood and waste shed was made.
The number of visitors to Kapeenniemi has increased during the corona years and after them, as the popularity of local tourism grew. Littering in the area increased significantly with the number of visitors, and at the same time, deficiencies in recycling opportunities were noticed. Now, in the new waste shelter, there is a recycling option for most of the waste that is generated while hiking. It is the responsibility of the hiker to take their own trash with them and to keep nature clean so that other hikers can also enjoy the pleasant environment.
During the trip, fires are often made in the fireplace and snacks are heated. For this purpose, a firewood point has also been built at the beginning of the Kapeenniemi route in connection with the waste shed. From this point, every hiker can take with them the amount of wood they need, and there is no need to be disappointed at the fire place if for some reason the wood is gone. Please take only the trees you need for camping, and do not transport them away from the Kapeenniemi area. The signs implemented in the project make it easier to use the area, i.e. they remind you to bring firewood and how to work safely in the area.
Please note that you may only make a fire at an official fire place. During a forest fire warning, making fires is prohibited in all places!

The attractive recreation areas project also developed waterways
With the help of the Attractive Recreation Areas project funded by Leader Viisar, Äänekoski's popular water destinations Viukari Island, Petäjä Island and Rekolahte were also developed. Signs telling about the area were added to these sites, new ecological dry toilets were made, and as needed, benches for fireplaces, for example, were improved. The destinations have been especially favorite destinations for boaters in the summer.
- The project aimed to make small concrete improvements to improve the user experience of the areas. Tanja Sulin, development manager of the city of Äänekoski, tells.
