Towards a more sustainable Äänekoski! Äänekoski's per capita emissions have decreased
Äänekoski has succeeded in reducing total emissions more than municipalities on average. Since 2005, the emission reduction is 40 percent and compared to 1990, it is 47 percent. The course of development is therefore positive, but additional measures are needed to achieve both regional and national climate goals.
According to preliminary information from the Finnish Environment Institute, the greenhouse gas emissions of municipalities have decreased by approximately 9 percent last year compared to 2022. The positive development is mainly due to the cleanup of the energy sector, i.e. electricity and district heating production. In the long term, emissions have decreased by 2005 percent since 37 and by 1990 percent compared to 39.
Central Finland's greenhouse emissions have decreased in all provinces. Central Finland ranks superbly as the fifth best in terms of the decrease in emissions per inhabitant. Emission reductions in the provinces were accelerated by the clean-up of production in the energy sector and especially by the reduction in emissions from electricity production. According to preliminary data, emission reductions were made in Äänekoski in almost all measured sectors. Only with regard to heating and rail traffic, emissions have increased since 2022. The residents of Äänekoski had reduced emissions, especially with regard to heating, by changing oil and electric heating to more energy-friendly forms. In addition, emissions have also been reduced in terms of traffic.
In Hinku municipalities, emissions have decreased on average more than in other municipalities. There are only two Hinku municipalities in central Finland, Äänekoski and Viitasaari.
- As a Hinku municipality, Äänekoski's goal is to reduce emissions by 80 percent compared to 2007. According to preliminary data for 2023, emissions have now decreased by 48 percent, so there is still a long way to go, but the direction is right. We need more bold decisions and actions in order to reach the goal, environment manager Hanna Ahonen says.
The city of Äänekoski does active climate and environmental work. We take care of our environment so that we can leave it better for future generations.
- Äänekoski's biggest emissions come mainly from heating and road traffic. This year, Äänekoski has tried to promote low-emission mobility, e.g. With the low-emission road transport project and drawing up a walking and cycling development plan, says Ahonen.
The figures are preliminary information for the year 2023. Read more Information from the Environmental Center.
