The reading prescription "prescribes" reading medicine for preschoolers and their families in Central Finland
The reading prescription to be implemented in Central Finland today, September 16.9.2024, XNUMX, encourages preschoolers and their families to read. The welfare district and Keski libraries have cooperated well in preparing reading recipes.
With a reading prescription, the counseling client is "assigned" to enjoy fun, entertaining and educational children's literature. In the Central Finland welfare region, a child aged 1–6 receives a reading prescription at the counseling center in connection with the age check, and reading pills can be found in the library.
There is a recipe for every age, and each recipe has four tips about a book series suitable for the age. Reading medicine is recommended to be taken together with a parent or other close adult 1–4 times a week. The professionals of Keski libraries have compiled reading tips for the recipes.
Support children's language and speech development
The goal of the reading recipe is to have a positive effect on the language and speech development of babies and play-age children, and thus on their well-being, growth and development. The reading recipe also activates parents to read to the child and brings togetherness into the family's everyday life.
The importance of reading in the development of language skills and the processing of emotions is significant, but according to research, children are read to less today than before.
- When you talk to a child, his language and speech develop. Singing, nursery rhymes and reading also support the development of language skills in infancy and play, explains the service manager Tiina Kelin from the Central Finland welfare area.
In the consultations, families who are already expecting a child are given information about, for example, early interaction.
- Later on, the child's language development is monitored at every child counseling visit. If necessary, the health nurse at the counseling center guides the questions of language and speech development according to age and need, says Tiina Kelin.
Cooperation with libraries
The well-being area has implemented a reading recipe in cooperation with the libraries of Central Finland. The library staff helps the customer find reading recipe books in the library.
- If you can't find the works mentioned in the recipe on the library shelf during a visit to the library, don't worry: with the help of the library staff, everyone will definitely find something to read, says the IT specialist Hanna-Leena Majuri-Jantunen From the Jyväskylä City Library.
The reading recipe also introduces the child to library services, which he can also use independently at a later age.
The initiative of Central Finland's reading recipe has been made by Karstula art society KarsTa ry. The reading recipe idea originated in Pälkäne.
- We are very happy to cooperate with libraries. Thanks also go to Karstula art society for the reading recipe initiative, says Tiina Kelin.
Central Finland's reading recipes are illustrated with the same pictures that can also be found on the covers of the advice card cases. The counseling card cases were implemented as part of cultural counseling activities.
