The reception centre's children's school has started well in Äänekoski

The teaching of children and young people at the Äänekoski reception center has started well and everything has gone according to plan. Koulunmäki school now has 39 children in preparatory education for basic education.

The teaching group preparing for basic education at Koulunmäki school in Äänekoski has a happy atmosphere and the children are really eager to learn.
The children are divided into three teaching groups according to age. The city of Äänekoski has hired three teachers for the groups and three school attendance assistants from the clients of the reception center who know English and have received pedagogical training in their home country. In addition, the teachers of the groups receive the help and sparring of a tutor-teacher. There are 4-5 hours of teaching per day, depending on the age level.
Preparatory teaching for basic education will continue practically throughout this school year. In regular school classes, students start next fall, and some can start even earlier.
Six children have signed up for preschool at Koulunmäki school, and three children are coming to Piilola daycare. The operation starts on September 12.9.2022, XNUMX, and before that, families can get to know the everyday life, facilities and staff of the daycare center and kindergarten together with an interpreter. There are four hours of pre-school education per day.
The family center organizes family meeting place activities for the reception center's customers and it has been a welcome service. An interpreter is also present at the events.

According to Kaija Laitinen, teacher of preparatory education for basic education, children learn best through play. This is a competition to see who can guess the correct number given by the teacher faster. After only four days of school, the children already know numbers, colors, days of the week, months and other everyday words in Finnish amazingly well.
War is not seen in the school classroom
Teacher of preparatory education Kaija Laitinen says that the children have been happy just to be able to come to school together.
- There is a lot of happy chatter here. There is no war here, says Laitinen.
- The students already know a lot and are very motivated to study. In just a few days, they have already learned an incredible amount. Ukrainian children are kind and respect adults.
According to Laitinen, children learn best through play. The city of Äänekoski has acquired learning materials for preparatory teaching and the children also have tablets for use, e.g. for learning games.
Äänekoski already has a group of students preparing for basic education for the families of the city's quota refugees. The city of Äänekoski receives 30 quota refugees every year.

Elleonora Mykhailychenko, of Ukrainian background, who knows English and has completed education studies in her home country, has been hired as a school attendance assistant for the teaching group of 8-12-year-olds.

More integration and language training for adults will start in Äänekoski
Central Finland's TE office has made initial surveys and integration plans for customers registered as unemployed jobseekers at the Äänekoski reception center, after which they can participate in integration training. Integration and language training for adults has already started, organized by both Koskela and the TE office. In October, more integration and language trainings are starting in Äänekoski.
The city of Äänekoski and the TE office will organize a recruitment event on October 4.10.2022, 80 in Äänekoski, where foreign language and Ukrainian background job seekers are also taken into account. In Central Finland, about XNUMX employers have informed the TE office of their willingness to recruit Ukrainians. If necessary, employers can get help in employing foreign speakers from the Immigrants' Competence Center.
Some customers have left the Äänekoski reception center to work or study elsewhere. Now there are about 30 free places here, when the total capacity is 300 people. The reception center in Äänekoski will move completely from Suolahti to Äänekoski during the fall. The reception center is still mapping the office space options in the city center as well as Ääneseudun Asunnot Oy's vacant apartments of appropriate size for its customers.
